The Forgetting Curve: Why Sunday's Spelling Words Vanish by Friday

Sunday evening, 7pm: your child spells all ten words correctly, twice through. Genuine mastery, witnessed by two parents. Friday, 9am: six of the ten are gone. The accusation hangs in the kitchen — you knew these! — and everyone quietly wonders whether this child's memory has a hole in it.
It doesn't. It has a completely normal, well-mapped memory, doing exactly what memories do: forgetting on a schedule. The problem is that Sunday-night cramming ignores the schedule — and the fix is one of the oldest, best-replicated tricks in learning science, cheap enough to run at any kitchen table.
The curve every memory rides
In the 1880s, Hermann Ebbinghaus memorized nonsense syllables and tested himself at intervals, mapping what became the forgetting curve: memory for new material drops steeply — most of the loss happens within a day or two — then levels off. What your child "knew" Sunday was real; it was simply riding a curve that had shed most of its cargo by Wednesday.
But Ebbinghaus found the antidote in the same data: each time you successfully recall something just as it's starting to fade, the curve resets — and flattens. The second forgetting happens more slowly than the first, the third more slowly still. Recall at the right moments a few times, and the memory stops being a fading trace and becomes furniture.
That's spaced repetition: not more practice — the same practice, redistributed to land where the forgetting is.
Why the Sunday session specifically fails
One long Sunday session gives each word many repetitions — but all of them land while the word is already in mind, which is exactly when repetition is cheapest and least useful. Recalling a word thirty seconds after last seeing it strengthens almost nothing; there was no fading to fight. Then comes the four-day gap where the curve does its work uninterrupted, and Friday harvests the wreckage.
Massed practice feels productive because it's easy — every answer comes out smoothly by round three. That smoothness is the tell. Memory strengthens in proportion to the effort of retrieval, and Sunday's retrievals were effortless. The struggle your child avoids by cramming is the active ingredient they needed.
The 4-touch week (same minutes, different map)
Take whatever total time you currently spend and split it like this:
- Touch 1 — Monday (5 min): first pass through the fresh list. Expect misses; they're fine. This is planting
- Touch 2 — Tuesday (5 min): full list again, from memory, checked immediately. Recall is a bit effortful now — that's the good part working
- Touch 3 — Thursday (5 min): the two-day gap makes this the money session; the words are just fading, and pulling them back now is what flattens the curve. Extra reps only for the misses
- Touch 4 — Friday morning (2 min): quick confidence lap in the car or over cereal. Not learning — warming up
Seventeen minutes total, less than most Sunday marathons, and it routinely converts the six-out-of-ten kid into a nine-out-of-ten kid within a few weeks — not by working harder, but by placing the same work where the forgetting is.
One upgrade if you keep any old lists: start each week's Touch 3 with sixty seconds of last week's words. That's the difference between passing Fridays and actually keeping the words — which was, presumably, the point.
Making the touches painless
Four short sessions only works if the sessions are frictionless — the schedule dies the week it becomes a nightly negotiation. Helpful moves:
- Anchor each touch to an existing routine — after dinner, before the bedtime chapter. Attached habits survive; free-floating ones don't
- Keep the format retrieval-shaped: hear the word, produce it, check. No copying, no staring at the list
- Games count fully. Word tennis on Tuesday, catch-the-mistake in Thursday's car ride — a touch is a touch. Run the 4-touch week for a term and your child learns something beyond this year's word lists: how remembering works. Little and often beats big and late — for spelling now, for times tables next year, for exam revision at sixteen. Kids who internalize the forgetting curve early stop blaming their brains and start scheduling around them. Few things you teach this year will compound longer.
One thing to try this week
Don't overhaul anything — just split. Take this week's usual practice time, cut it into Monday/Tuesday/Thursday/Friday-morning pieces, and change nothing else: same words, same kitchen, same kid. Then watch Friday. One good Friday won't prove the science, but it will do something more useful — it'll make next week's four touches an easy sell to the household skeptic, whichever one of you that is.
