Privacy Policy
Last updated: June 3, 2026
This Privacy Policy explains how The Spelling Test ("we", "us") collects, uses, and protects your information when you use The Spelling Test mobile app (the "App") and our website at spellingtest.app (the "Site"), together the "Service".
1. Information we collect
- Account information. An account is created automatically the first time you open the App, identified only by a username you can change — no email address or password is required to use the App or to subscribe. If you choose to add an email and password (to access your account on other devices), we store the email and a hashed password. Display name and avatar are optional.
- Game data. Score, correct/incorrect/skipped counts, time taken, challenge played, XP, and streak — used for leaderboards and personal stats.
- Purchase information. When you subscribe, we receive a purchase token / receipt from Google Play or the Apple App Store and the product you bought. We do not see or store your payment card.
- Device data. When you submit feedback, we collect app version, OS, and basic device model to reproduce the issue.
- Advertising identifier. Google AdMob may collect a device advertising identifier subject to your OS privacy settings (Limit Ad Tracking on iOS, "Reset advertising ID" / opt-out on Android).
2. What we don't collect
Contacts, photos, location, microphone audio, biometrics, browsing history outside the App. We do not sell your information. We do not show personalized ads based on cross-app tracking by default.
3. Children's privacy
The App is rated for general audiences. We do not knowingly collect personally identifiable information from children under 13 (or under 16 in the EEA/UK) without verifiable parental consent. If you believe we have, contact [email protected] and we will delete it promptly.
4. How we use your information
- To run, maintain, and improve the Service
- To compute and display leaderboards and personal stats
- To verify subscriptions and grant the corresponding entitlements
- To respond to support requests and feedback
- To diagnose crashes and operational problems
- To detect and prevent abuse, fraud, and policy violations
5. Legal bases (EEA / UK users)
We process personal data on the bases of (a) performance of the contract to provide the Service, (b) our legitimate interest in operating and improving the Service, (c) consent (for any optional analytics or personalized advertising), and (d) legal obligation.
6. Sharing & processors
We share data only with the processors required to run the Service:
- Google AdMob — advertising in the App
- Google Play Billing & Apple App Store — purchase processing
- OpenAI — text-to-speech audio generation (we send only the words being voiced; never personal data)
- Cloudflare R2 — audio storage
- Our hosting provider — server & database hosting
Each processor has its own privacy policy.
7. Data retention
We keep account and game data for as long as your account is active. When you delete your account (see Account Deletion), your record and personal data are removed within 30 days; aggregated, non-identifying play statistics may be retained.
8. Security
We use HTTPS in transit, hash passwords with bcrypt, isolate purchase tokens from public surfaces, and limit production access to authorized personnel.
9. Your rights
You can request access, correction, export, or deletion of your data at any time by emailing [email protected]. EEA / UK users may also lodge a complaint with their supervisory authority. California users may exercise their CCPA rights via the same address.
10. International transfers
Our servers and processors are based in the United States and the European Union. By using the Service you understand your data may be transferred there.
11. Cookies
The Site uses minimal first-party cookies for session management; details are in our Cookie Policy. The App does not use cookies.
12. Changes
We may update this policy occasionally. Material changes will be announced inside the App on the next launch and on the Site's home page.
13. Contact
Questions, requests, or complaints: [email protected].
