The routine

Read the week's word list out loud. Your child repeats each word back. No writing yet. This calms the nervous system and reminds them what's coming.

Phase 2 — Dictation (5 minutes)

You say a word. They write it. Move on. Do not react to misspellings as you go. Pace is everything — a child who has time to dread their answer will freeze. Aim for 8–12 words in five minutes.

Phase 3 — Targeted review (3 minutes)

Go through what they wrote. For each miss, do not lecture. Show the correct version. Ask them to spot the difference. Say the word slowly. Have them write it once more. Three minutes is enough for two or three misses. Skip the rest until tomorrow.

Phase 4 — One sentence (1 minute)

Pick the trickiest word of the night. Your child writes one sentence using it. The sentence can be silly — it usually should be. "My friend has six toes" is a better learning tool than "My friend is kind," because they'll remember the toes.

The timer rings. Stop. Don't pile on "just one more."

A week plan that fits real life

Four nights, ten minutes each. Forty minutes total. More than enough.

  • Monday — Full list. Establish the baseline of which words are easy and which are sticky.
  • Tuesday — Sticky words only, twice. Skip the easy ones.

What if my child resists even ten minutes?

Negotiate. Five minutes tonight, ten tomorrow. Five minutes is better than zero, and once they're in, they often keep going.

Forgive yourself and pick up the next night. Consistency over a term matters more than consistency this week.

Fine. Kids adapt. The routine is robust enough that two slightly different versions still work.
