Your child failed the spelling test. Or scraped a C, again, and you're staring at the marked-up page wondering what's supposed to happen now. Six weeks is enough to fix this — not enough to turn anyone into a national champion, but enough to move a kid from frustrated to functional.
How to improve spelling for kids isn't about volume. It's about hitting the gap your kid actually has, with the right kind of practice, for short stretches, often. Skip any of those three and six weeks slide by with nothing to show.
Week 1–2: Find the actual gap
Before drilling anything, you need a snapshot. Pull twenty words your child has gotten wrong in the last month — from school tests, journals, the back of last week's homework. Dictate them. Watch what they do.
You're looking for patterns, not totals. Do they drop letters in the middle of long words? Mix up homophones? Use the wrong vowel in unstressed syllables? Forget silent letters? Each of these is a different problem, and they need different fixes.
Write down the pattern you see. "Drops middle letters" is a real diagnosis. "Bad at spelling" is not.
Week 3–4: Build the daily reps
Pick a fixed 10-minute slot. After dinner, before screen time, in the car on the way to soccer — anywhere that already happens at the same time each day. Habits stick to existing routines, not to good intentions.
Each session looks the same:
- 2 minutes: warm up with five words they already know cold.
- 5 minutes: work on five new words, hearing each one aloud, writing it twice.
- 3 minutes: review yesterday's wobbly words.
That's it. Don't extend it when it's going well. Stop at ten minutes. You want them closing the notebook still wanting more, not bored and resentful.

Week 5: Spiral review

This is where most home practice falls apart. Parents move on too fast because the new lists feel like progress. Real spelling memory needs the word to come back three or four times across weeks before it locks in.
Week 6: Pressure-test it
Run a mock spelling test. Twenty words your child has worked on, dictated at a normal pace, with no replays. This isn't a punishment — it's a check on whether the practice actually transferred.
If they get 17 or more right, your plan worked. Keep the routine going with new words.
If they land between 12 and 16, the gap is closing but the pressure of a real test is still rattling them. Add one mock test a week for the next month.
Under 12, the gap was bigger than two weeks of warm-up could find. Go back to step one with fresh eyes — there's probably a phonics issue underneath that needs targeted help, and a chat with the teacher is worth your time.
What to do when it stalls
Every six-week plan hits a wall around day 18. The novelty's gone, the wins aren't dramatic, and your kid would rather watch anything else. Three things help:
- Shorten, don't extend. Drop to seven minutes for a week. Less feels easier; easier gets done.
- Switch the format. If you've been writing, switch to typing on a phone or tablet. If you've been at the table, do it on a whiteboard. Same content, fresh angle.
- Borrow stakes. A sticker chart, a streak counter, a small reward at week six — whatever your kid's currency is. Tiny stakes carry surprisingly far.
The one habit that matters most
If you do nothing else from this plan, do this: same time every day, ten minutes, no skipping for "we're tired tonight." Three weeks of that beats six weeks of inconsistent thirty-minute sessions. Spelling is a slow build, and the schedule is more than half of it.
The other half is the diagnosis from week one. Without it, you'll spend six weeks drilling words your child can already spell while the actual gap goes untouched. With it, every minute of practice is aimed at a problem you've named.
One thing to try this week: tonight at dinner, ask your child to dictate five words to you and check your spelling. Watching a parent miss one is more useful than any worksheet — it tells them spelling is hard for grown-ups too, and that getting better is a thing humans do.
